Homeless Emergency Project (HEP) is a registered 501 (c)(3) charitable
organization. Our mission is to provide homeless and very low-income
individuals and families with housing, food, clothing, and support
services necessary to obtain self-sufficiency and improved quality of
life.
HEP is the oldest and largest provider of emergency housing and support
services in Pinellas County. As part of our mission to help the
homeless, HEP operates a 300-bed facility where emergency and
transitional housing is provided for the temporarily homeless, as well
as, permanent supportive housing for mentally disabled individuals and
families.
In
partnership with Morton Plant Hospital, Bay Care Health Systems,
Pinellas County Human Services, Directions for Mental Health, and West
Care we offer a wide range of on-site medical and mental health services
for our clients, as well.
Our Programs:
Residential: The Emergency Housing Program was developed to provide
homeless individuals and families with temporary housing, food,
clothing, and supportive services to assist them in obtaining and
remaining in permanent housing. Transitional Housing is available for
those individuals who do not qualify for long-term housing; it is a
chance to save money and utilize services enabling self-sufficiency.
Permanent Supportive Housing provides housing and supportive services on
a long-term basis for homeless persons with disabilities.
Kitchen and Dining Facility: HEP is equipped with a professional kitchen
and a staff that served over 100,000 meals last year to residents. Meals
are served seven days a week, 365 days a year to all residents living in
emergency shelter; food baskets are additionally distributed to
individuals and families residing in the transitional and permanent
supportive housing.
Youth Enrichment: The mission of the Keep Encouraging Youth (KEY) to
Succeed program is to provide academic enrichment and other services and
programs that reinforce and complement school-based learning among
participants. In working with teachers and parents, the program is
helping homeless youth succeed against great odds.
Medical & Mental Health Services: Morton Plant Hospital staffs a
multidisciplinary mental health outreach care team. In addition, The
Pinellas County Medical Van visits the shelter twice weekly to address
any physical health needs of those living in the shelter and Bay Pines
Medical Center provides veterans services on campus.
Free Dental Clinic: The Free Dental Clinic was created in 1994 to
provide free dental care for homeless and very low-income individuals
and families. Since its inception, over $1.5 million worth of free
dental care has been provided by volunteer dentists and hygienists. The
Free Dental Clinic is run entirely on the generosity of volunteer
dentists from the community.
Freewheel Bike Recycling and Distribution Program: Freewheel is a
not-for-profit bike repair shop and distribution program. This program
provides the freedom of personal transportation to homeless adults and
children while also recycling/refurbishing donated bikes and bike
components.
