The Learning Center Is Back!
Classes are well underway and great things are happening at the Learning Center! Our new
director, Shirley McAllister, is wonderful, and she has great plans for the future and brings a wealth of
experience as our teacher. If you
are interested in signing up for a class you can simply call the parish office (595-2374) or email us at
calvaryirb@tampabay.rr.com. What a wonderful opportunity to polish up your own computer skills and also to invite friends and neighbors to experience this very special ministry of Calvary Episcopal Church.
NEW for January 2011! How to use your new Computer or Laptop
This class is designed to help a basic computer user work with his/her computer or laptop. We will look at the fundamentals of using a computer such as: the keyboard, the monitor (do you leave it on or turn it off?) and the webcam (do you have a webcam built into your new computer?). If you have any questions regarding your new computer, this is the class for you!
The nominal fee of $20.00 for the class (2 sessions per class) is designed to make it
possible for anyone to attend. Each student will be given a folder with information covered
in the class in order to take the newly learned skills with them. There will be 2 one-and-a-half
hours of hands-on classes in the parish’s computer lab. See details below:
How to use your new Computer or Laptop
This class is offered on
Saturday mornings (January 22nd and 29th) 10:00am-11:30am.
Learn how to work with your new Computer or Laptop:
- How to properly start and shut down your computer
- Tips and Tricks on using the keyboard
- Tips on using the webcam that came with your new laptop
- Many more Tips and Tricks will be shared in class!

Here are some examples of classes that were offered in 2010:
Basic Internet Class
This class is designed to help a basic computer person/student learn how to use the internet: There are 3 one-hour class sessions. This is a hands-on class where you the student will be surfing the web. Each student will also be given a folder with the information covered in each class. Some of the items that will be covered are:
Learn about the various internet browsers and how to set your home page; hHow to save and bookmark your favorite websites; what are search engines for and what are the most popular search engines.
Visit many places with just one click from your computer.
We will share with you many websites that you never knew existed!
Computer Basics Class
This class is designed to help a basic computer person/student learn how to maintain his/her computer. There are 3 one-hour class sessions. This is a hands-on class where you the student will be doing some of these maintenance items. Each student will also be given a folder with the information covered in each class. Some of the items covered are:
- How to do monthly maintenance on your computer, disk clean up, defrag, etc.
- How to update your virus software monthly
- How to clean your keyboard and much more
- Free software to download for malware – (viruses can come through your computer via malware)
Digital Pictures
This class is designed to help a basic to mid-level computer user download pictures from a
digital camera to a computer. We will look at a free software tool, Picasa, that will allow you
to easily Email, Edit, and Print photos. Some of the items covered are:
- Learn how to download digital photos from your camera to your computer
- How to edit digital photos (adjust the lightness or darkness of the photo)
- How to email digital photos to family and friends
- How to print digital photos received in an email or from your camera
Microsoft Office Suite 2003 and 2007: Word and Excel
This class is designed to help a mid-level computer user work with Microsoft Office Suite tools. We will look at tools that are most commonly used in Microsoft Word and Excel Office Suite 2003 and 2007. For example, in Microsoft Word you will learn how to create a letter, start a new paragraph, copy and paste data as well as spell check. In Microsoft Excel you will learn how to create a basic budget worksheet, work with cells, and perform calculations.
